Stopping spammers

Postby Christine Parker » September 21st, 2015, 11:11 pm

Since the forum restarted, I have deleted about 15-20 spammers, all easily recognised by weird names and then double checked by looking at their ip addresses, most from India, rather than more traditional sites, like Africa and Europe.

They are occurring at about 3 times the rate of genuine applications, most of whom I know personally and therefore easily recognised.

Once the fakes are spotted, it takes just 3-4 mouse clicks to delete them all.

Spam is a big problem on email and websites, if that was not bad enough our phones are now bombarded with spam.

It is bad enough that the spam fills up your inbox or as in a forum fake accounts etc, however its a real problem as these fake accounts are probably being used to post links to sites containing viruses.

Then there is the outright nasty stuff of people attacking other computers to break into them for various reasons.

I am finding that bogus registration attempts by spammers is much much less than it was when we started the last Forum. It was around 200/day at one stage, dropped to about 20/day when the forum crashed.

It is just 2-4 per day now. Very manageable.

It remains quite low and managable, with barely a handful. I just deleted 3. there was one genuine one.
