What is the Seahorse Society?
The Seahorse Society of New South Wales is a non-profit self-help organisation for crossdressers and transgender people in New South Wales, Australia.
What is its purpose?
The Society's purpose is to provide mutual support for crossdressers and transgender people, their partners and families. The Society continues to perform its main function of a social support group. It focuses on helping crossdressers to meet socially with like-minded people.
The Society holds meetings once a month at hired premises in Sydney, and also organizes other social events, such as restaurant nights, harbour cruises and the yearly Seahorse Ball. Other benefits to members include a monthly magazine and a library of books and videos.
What is its history?
Under its original name, The Seahorse Club, it came into being in 1971, formed by a group of cross-dressers who wished to share their interests with similarly minded people within the community. The membership was initially Australia wide, but the club quickly grew and eventually each state formed their own branch.
The Seahorse Society of N.S.W. was incorporated in 1990, and at the same time, membership was opened to anyone with a serious interest in cross-dressing.
